The LOVERACING.NZ Pony Scurry Series has wrapped up another successful season, with 98 participants taking part and an exciting mixed-age final on 10 October at Hastings Racecourse on Livamol Classic Day.

The series gives young equestrians the chance to experience the thrill of riding on a racetrack, while introducing them and their families to the people and career opportunities within Thoroughbred racing.

For some, that first experience has become the starting point for a career, with past participants progressing into roles as stablehands, trackwork riders and apprentice jockeys.

Former participant Tom Wigram is among those taking the next step, having recently been accepted into NZTR’s Elite Jockey Programme. His journey shows how an early introduction through pony scurries can spark an interest in pursuing racing professionally.

NZTR Head of Education, Training and Recruitment Amy Johnson says the series provides a valuable connection between recreational riding and the racing workforce.

“Pony scurries give young riders a chance to experience racing first-hand, meet people in the industry and see where their love of horses could take them,” Johnson says.

“Tom’s progression into the Elite Jockey Programme is a great example of that pathway. It’s exciting to see young people build on their pony scurry experience and take the next step towards a career.

“With 98 participants this season, we’ve had a valuable opportunity to connect with young riders and their families and help them discover the range of roles available in thoroughbred racing.”

“A special thank you to NZTR licensed trainer Kirsty Lawrence, who continues to go above and beyond to help deliver the pony scurries. She clearly gets as much enjoyment from watching the kids have fun as they do from taking part, and we’re very grateful for her enthusiasm and support.”

Alongside the competition, those connections are an important part of the series’ lasting value, helping young equestrians turn their riding skills and enthusiasm for horses into future opportunities.
