New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR), in partnership with Dean McKenzie, is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2025 NZTR McKenzie Future Leaders Scholarship.

Jointly funded by NZTR and Dean McKenzie, the Scholarship offers a $10,000 award to support promising students looking to the further their education and have a connection to the Thoroughbred racing industry. Particularly targeting individuals planning to study Commerce or Law at a New Zealand university, with a demonstrated link to the Thoroughbred racing community.

NZTR Chief Executive Officer Matt Ballesty said the Scholarship reflects NZTR’s commitment to investing in the future of the sport.

“This Scholarship is about more than financial support, it’s about identifying and nurturing individuals who have both the passion for our sport and the potential to lead it forward,” said Ballesty.

“We’re excited to continue this partnership with Dean McKenzie and to support the development of future leaders.”

Co-benefactor Dean McKenzie explained the need for leaders and administrators who not only had a passion for racing, but the skills to make an impact.

“The racing industry thrives when decisions are made by people who understand its heartbeat and have the skills to drive it into the future,” McKenzie said.

“The strength of our industry depends on capable, informed leadership. By supporting students with a genuine connection to racing, we’re helping ensure that future administrators bring both expertise and passion to the table.”

Last year’s recipient, Matthew Chitty, is currently studying a double major in accounting and economics at Otago University. Raised on his family’s Haunui Farm, Chitty has been immersed in the Thoroughbred industry from a young age.

“I’m deeply appreciative of the support this Scholarship provides to students like me who are passionate about contributing to the Thoroughbred industry while pursuing higher education,” said Chitty.

“It’s helped ease financial pressures and inspired me to strive for excellence in my studies, with the hope of giving back to an industry that’s played such a meaningful role in my life.”
