New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) is proud to announce that Matthew Chitty has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 NZTR McKenzie Future Leaders Scholarship. This scholarship is designed to identify and support the next generation of leaders in the racing industry and reflects Chitty’s commitment, passion, and potential for shaping the future of New Zealand racing.
The NZTR McKenzie Future Leaders Scholarship, established in 2023, was created to support students commencing a degree in Commerce or Law, with a connection to the Thoroughbred racing industry. The primary objective is to nurture future leaders and administrators for the benefit of New Zealand’s racing industry.
This year’s recipient, Matthew Chitty, has been involved in the thoroughbred industry from a young age working alongside his family at their Auckland stud, Haunui Farm. From handling foals to yearling prep, he experienced most hands-on aspects on the farm before heading off to Otago University where he is now double majoring in accounting and economics.
Chitty’s passion for Thoroughbred racing was evident when asked what the scholarship meant to him.
“I am deeply appreciative of the support the NZTR McKenzie Scholarship provides for students like me who are passionate about contributing to the Thoroughbred Industry while pursuing higher education," he said.
“This scholarship not only helps with financial pressures but also inspires me to strive for excellence in my Commerce studies and to one day give back to an industry that has played such a meaningful role in my life.”
The NZTR McKenzie Scholarship reflects the ongoing efforts of NZTR to invest in the future of thoroughbred racing, highlighting the commitment to nurturing new talent and ensuring a bright future for the sport. Scholarship founder Dean McKenzie was thrilled to congratulate Matthew on being selected and acknowledged the bright future he holds.
“Matthew is a perfect example of the candidate we hoped would apply. Our goal is to support those who want to make an impact in racing administration and Matthew showed clear potential for leadership.”
“It’s a pleasure to be able to support up-and-coming students who have an avid interest in the Thoroughbred racing industry, and we will watch Matthew’s progress with great interest, eager to see how he will influence the industry in the years ahead.” McKenzie said.
