Running from Friday 20 to Monday 30 November, National Thoroughbred Week provides a behind-the-scenes look at the people, horses and care that underpin the industry. Events can include trackwork mornings, stable and stud tours, farrier demonstrations and insights into everyday life on farms and training properties.

• New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing

The initiative brings together racing stables, studs, farms, veterinary clinics and other industry organisations to help people learn more about Thoroughbreds both during and after their racing careers.

National Thoroughbred Week also highlights the wide range of careers within the industry, its animal welfare practices and the significant work undertaken each day to support the health and wellbeing of Thoroughbreds.

NZTR Head of Thoroughbred Welfare Catlyn Calder said National Thoroughbred Week provided an important opportunity to give people a first-hand look at the care Thoroughbreds receive throughout their lives.

“Opening our doors allows people to see the knowledge, commitment and care that go into supporting Thoroughbreds every day, both during their racing careers and afterwards,” Calder said.

“It is also an opportunity to answer questions, build greater understanding of our industry and showcase the many people and career pathways involved in caring for these horses. We encourage stables, studs, farms and other industry organisations across New Zealand to get involved.”

National Thoroughbred Week is continuing to welcome New Zealand hosts for 2026. Events can range from an intimate veterinary clinic tour or school farm visit to a public trackwork morning or open day.

Businesses and organisations interested in hosting can register through the ‘Become a Host’ section of the National Thoroughbred Week website.

National Thoroughbred Week will run from November 20 - 30, 2026, giving thousands of Australians and New Zealanders the opportunity to step inside real working training stables, breeding farms, and aftercare centres.

National Thoroughbred Week is part of the Together for International Racing initiative: a movement aligning global ideas to drive the thoroughbred industry forward. National Thoroughbred Week is an annual hands-on experience that allows people to see, touch, and connect with these incredible horses across Australia and New Zealand.
