New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has appointed experienced racing administrator Craig Baker as Head of Racing Development, strengthening its operational and strategic capability.
Baker will join NZTR on October 27 from Auckland Thoroughbred Racing (ATR), where he is Executive General Manager, Racing and Operations. He brings more than 20 years’ experience across racing administration, club operations, governing bodies and the breeding sector.
NZTR GM Racing, Mitch Lamb, said the appointment represented an important investment in NZTR’s core racing function.
“Craig has extensive operational and strategic knowledge, strong industry relationships and a clear understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing New Zealand racing,” Lamb said.
“His appointment strengthens our capacity to create and deliver our strategic racing plans, while continuing to deliver effectively across our core responsibilities.”
“Over the next 12 months, we will be working closely with clubs, the Racing Integrity Board, Entain, TAB New Zealand and the newly formed Establishment Board to advance a number of important change initiatives. Craig’s practical experience and industry-wide perspective will be invaluable as we work through that programme.”
Baker said he was looking forward to joining NZTR in what will be an impactful role.
“After 11 hugely rewarding years, it has been a privilege to work alongside such a great team at Auckland Racing Club and now Auckland Thoroughbred Racing.
“I’m looking forward to working with Mitch and the wider team at NZTR and using my experience to contribute positively to the future of thoroughbred racing.”
Baker’s arrival will coincide with the planned conclusion of Charlotte Mills’ 12-month contract as Racing Advisor.
Lamb acknowledged the significant contribution Mills had made during her time with NZTR.
“Charlotte’s appointment with NZTR coincided with my own and I personally cannot thank her enough for the invaluable insight, advice, and camaraderie that I was fortunate enough to receive from her during the initial time in my role,” he said.
“Her willingness to share the learnings from her enormous industry experience with the entire NZTR team has been of great benefit. We thank Charlotte for her commitment to New Zealand racing and wish her every success for the future.”
