New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) is thrilled to announce the winning recipient of its NZB Kiwi Charity Draw initiative, determined today at Auckland Thoroughbred Racing’s Melbourne Cup Day meeting.
NZTR congratulates NZB Kiwi Slot Holder Brendan and Jo Lindsay of Cambridge Stud and their charity partner Rodney Animal Rescue, who drew Son of Sun (NZ) and powered home to victory in Race 5 - the Barfoot and Thompson (2400m) at Ellerslie Racecourse.
As part of this initiative, each Slot Holder and their associated charity were randomly allocated a horse. The winning charity, Rodney Animal Rescue, is now set to receive 50% of the proceeds above the reserve from NZTR’s one-year slot auction, taking place later this month.
Brendan Lindsay shared his delight with the result, noting the significance of this win for their chosen charity partner.
"We're just so thrilled that our chosen charity is going to benefit from this initiative and being part of the NZB Kiwi.”
"There are so many well-deserving charities out there, but we know how much of a difference this is going to make to the team at Rodney Animal Rescue who do some truly amazing work in our community.
"Son of Sun is by Tavistock and was given a superb ride by our stable jockey Warren Kennedy - it feels like this was meant to be!” Lindsay said.
NZTR Chairman Russell Warwick expressed enthusiasm for the initiative.
“We’re delighted to see the NZB Kiwi Charity Draw generate meaningful outcomes for our charity partners and Slot Holders,” Warwick said.
“We’ve been able to bring together the energy of racing with the opportunity to support organisations that are making a difference in New Zealand, with each charity all set to receive a $1,000 donation.
“Congratulations to Brendan and Jo and Rodney Animal Rescue - we look forward to seeing the positive impact of this win as we head towards the one-year slot auction,” he said.
Attention now turns to NZTR’s upcoming one-year slot auction, which will be held on Tuesday 19 November, 5pm (NZT) at the Karaka Sales Centre.
This event, on the eve of NZB’s Ready to Run Sale, is expected to attract considerable interest from the racing and wider mainstream community.
