New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has confirmed new leadership appointments within its Members’ Council, with Geoff Vazey appointed Chair and Bernard Hickey appointed Deputy Chair.
Vazey steps into the Chair role after six years on the Members’ Council, including time as Deputy Chair. He also serves as a Director of Auckland Thoroughbred Racing, having been elected to the Auckland Racing Club board in 2007 and transitioning to the Auckland Thoroughbred Racing Board in 2021.
The appointments follow Jeff McCall’s decision to step down as Chair after three years in the role, with McCall continuing on the Members’ Council as the Southern Representative.
Vazey paid tribute to McCall’s contribution.
“I’d like to acknowledge Jeff McCall for several years of very good service, and I’m pleased he’ll be continuing as a member of the Council,” Vazey said.
Hickey has been appointed Deputy Chair following six years on the Members’ Council, and previous service as President of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners’ Federation for eight years.
McCall said he was looking forward to continuing his involvement with the Council.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time as Chair over the past three years, and I’m looking forward to continuing my contribution as the Southern Representative,” McCall said.
NZTR Chair Russell Warwick acknowledged the appointments and thanked McCall for his contribution.
“I want to thank Jeff for his work over the past three years as Chair of the Members’ Council, and for the time he’s given to the industry,” Warwick said.
“Geoff and Bernard bring solid governance experience, and I’m looking forward to working with them as the Council continues its work within our industry structure.”
