New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) and the New Zealand Pony Clubs Association (NZPCA) have formalised a three-year partnership to connect grassroots equestrians with careers in racing and breeding, while supporting Thoroughbreds in their lives beyond racing.

NZTR and NZPCA have worked successfully together for a number of years on shared initiatives. The agreement builds on that relationship, strengthening existing activities and introducing new opportunities, including the Thoroughbred Rider Scholarship, to support Pony Club members riding and developing Thoroughbreds.

The partnership brings together a shared commitment to horse welfare, education and rider development. It aims to help Pony Club members explore opportunities in the Thoroughbred workforce and build the knowledge and confidence to ride, develop and care for former racehorses.

NZTR General Manager Welfare and Industry Capability, Sam Fursdon, says the partnership creates opportunities for both people and horses.

“Pony Club is where many young people develop their love of horses and the horsemanship skills that can underpin a future in our industry. We want to help them see where that passion could take them, whether that is working in racing or breeding, or riding and caring for a Thoroughbred beyond its racing career.

“Supporting successful second careers for Thoroughbreds also means supporting the people who take them on. Connecting riders with education, practical guidance and experienced horse people can help build lasting partnerships and good welfare outcomes.”

The agreement provides a framework for collaboration on career information, industry visits, practical experiences and access to industry expertise. It also supports education on horse care, responsible ownership and the transition and retraining of former racehorses.

Another focus will be recognising Thoroughbreds within Pony Club activities, showcasing successful horse and rider combinations and encouraging participation across a range of equestrian disciplines.

NZPCA Chief executive Lizzie Turnbull says the partnership will help members build on the skills and interests they develop through Pony Club.

“Our members share a passion for horses and a commitment to learning. This partnership offers an opportunity to connect that enthusiasm with the experience and knowledge within the Thoroughbred sector.

“We look forward to working with NZTR to support our riders, celebrate the versatility of Thoroughbreds and help young people discover the opportunities available to them.”

NZTR and NZPCA will agree an annual activity plan to guide delivery, building on existing initiatives and developing new activities around shared priorities and available resources. Further details, including how to apply for the Thoroughbred Rider Scholarship, will be shared through both organisations’ channels in due course.

“This is about strengthening the connection between racing and the wider equestrian community,” Fursdon says. “By investing in those relationships, we can help more people find a future with Thoroughbreds and more Thoroughbreds enjoy successful lives beyond racing.”
