There are now 13 known properties where Strangles cases are being managed, all within the Waikato. Eight of these properties are currently notified to the RIB.

The RIB has completed targeted surveillance testing across the Auckland and Central Districts racing populations, with approximately 20% of horses at major training centres tested. All results were clear, providing confidence that, within the limits of the testing undertaken, Strangles is not widespread in these regions.

Based on these results, the following changes take effect from Thursday 6 August:

• Temperature monitoring and the Race & Trial Health Declaration are now only required for horses based in the Waikato.
• North Island to South Island travel requirements remain unchanged, including a negative PCR test and completion of the RIB Strangles Travel Declaration.
• There are no longer any Strangles requirements for horses travelling from the South Island to the North Island.

While the presentation of temperature records for raceday and trials is no longer required outside the Waikato, trainers are encouraged to continue monitoring their horses’ temperatures and general health. Good biosecurity practices and prompt reporting of suspected cases are also essential.

Targeted surveillance testing will continue across the Waikato during the week commencing 10 August. Those results will inform the next review of biosecurity measures, including consideration of any further easing of restrictions where appropriate. In the meantime, all participants are encouraged to remain vigilant and continue following good biosecurity practices.

Immediate notification remains essential

Anyone responsible for thoroughbreds or standardbreds must notify the RIB Veterinary Services Manager immediately when Strangles has been confirmed, or where an attending veterinarian considers Strangles to be a likely diagnosis.

Early notification is one of the most effective ways to limit disease spread and protect the wider racing industry. The sooner the RIB has a clear understanding of the situation, the sooner it can implement targeted, proportionate measures that support a safe return to normal operations.

NZTR funding support

To support the management of the current strangles outbreak, NZTR has approved a temporary funding framework through the 1% Welfare Levy Reserve Fund. NZTR will fully fund RIB-coordinated targeted surveillance testing and provide financial assistance towards approved veterinary sampling and laboratory testing for eligible properties requiring case management or clearance testing. We will work directly with affected trainers and owners on a case-by-case basis to ensure appropriate support is available, with the aim of reducing financial barriers to testing, supporting horse welfare and assisting the safe return of Thoroughbred horses to training and racing.
