As the summer festivities wind down and the first semester commences for university students, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR), in collaboration with Dean McKenzie, are pleased to announce the recipient of the inaugural NZTR McKenzie Future Leaders Scholarship for 2024.

The NZTR McKenzie Future Leaders Scholarship was created to support students commencing a degree in Commerce or Law, with a connection to the Thoroughbred racing industry. The primary objective is to nurture future leaders and administrators for the benefit of New Zealand’s racing industry.

Established in 2023, Auckland-based Emma Mathieson, has been awarded $10,000 towards helping her complete the first year of her studies at university.

Scholarship founder Dean McKenzie is thrilled to announce the inaugural recipient.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to support up-and-coming students who have an avid interest in the Thoroughbred racing industry, and we look forward to following Emma’s journey throughout her studies,” McKenzie said.

With no familial connection to the Thoroughbred industry, Emma created her own path of success.

She began volunteering at a riding school at a young age and eventually competed around the world as a member of the New Zealand Mounted games team.

After she graduated high school, Mathieson joined the team at Westbury Stud as a Stud Groom in 2021, a decision she calls one of the best career moves she has ever made.

Now pursuing a Bachelor of Law through Auckland University of Technology, Mathieson hopes to merge her love of the horse and law to benefit the Thoroughbred industry.

When asked about her future, Mathieson is quick to credit Westbury Stud for her ability to study and continue her work alongside the horses she loves so much.

“I plan on staying at Westbury working through university because It gives me such great flexibility and it’s such a nice break from books and computers,” she said.

“By the time I graduate I would’ve been at Westbury for six years and I think that experience alongside my equestrian background will be really beneficial to help me pursue many avenues in law.”

As the scholarship was intended, Mathieson plans to use her degree to the benefit of the equine industry. She sees the potential of the many aspects the industry has to offer.

“After university I would love to be an equine specialist lawyer,” she said.

“There are so many aspects within the Thoroughbred industry from employment to ownership, liabilities, and even horse welfare that are all intertwined.

“I’m really grateful to have been elected for the scholarship and look forward to continuing my passion.”

NZTR CEO Bruce Sharrock commented on the high quality of applicants and what he believed set Mathieson apart.

“Several impressive submissions were accepted, but Emma’s impeccable work ethic and drive to continue her career in the Thoroughbred racing industry is what set her apart from the rest.” Sharrock said.

Due to the high calibre of applicants, New Zealand racing Clubs were generous to award three additional grants to applicants whose profiles stood out.

Tom McLean received a grant from Auckland Thoroughbred Racing, Hannah Lally from Otago Racing Club and Amelia Southworth from Canterbury Jockey Club.

The NZTR McKenzie Scholarship will be offered once again in 2024 to incoming students.
