New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) and RACE Inc. today announced that RACE Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Savell has resigned from his role.

Race Inc. Chair Richard Simpson acknowledged Savell’s leadership over the past four years as CEO.

“Tim has been at the helm during a period of immense change and ongoing investment in our facilities,” he said.

“From the latter stages of the pandemic, through to the synthetic build and full course reconstruction at RACE Awapuni, it has been a period where RACE has had to constantly adapt to changing circumstances.

“On behalf of the entire Board and staff, I would like wish Tim all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts and achievements throughout this time, as well as his support through the transition phase in the coming months,” Simpson said.

Outgoing CEO Tim Savell thanked the Club for their support and reflected on his tenure.

“My time at RACE has been enjoyable, but it is now time to move on to other challenges,” Savell said.

“It has been an unforgettable journey in an industry that is filled with passionate and hardworking stakeholders, all of whom are keen to see Thoroughbred racing continue to progress, both within our region and nationally.

“I would like to thank the members of the Board, staff and our Club committee members who have been so supportive during my time and wish everyone all the best for the future. With both the return to racing on the course proper at RACE Awapuni and the 120th Summer Carnival at RACE Trentham to look forward to in the coming months, it is an exciting time for RACE and its Member Clubs,” he added.

To ensure stability and continuity during the transition, NZTR Chief Operating Officer Darin Balcombe will provide oversight and support to RACE Inc. He will take on this role through his newly appointed position as NZTR General Manager – Special Projects, which involves working closely with Clubs and industry stakeholders.

“RACE has some important projects underway to get the Central Districts back on track,” he said.

“My focus will be on supporting the Club, participants, and stakeholders, while ensuring that the business continues to move forward with confidence,” said Darin Balcombe, GM-Special Projects.
