The updated measures are designed to minimise the risk of disease spread while allowing racing and trialling to continue safely. They build on the protocols already in place and provide additional clarity around the requirements for temperature monitoring, health declarations and, where applicable, Serum Amyloid A (SAA) testing.
NZTR acknowledges these requirements place additional responsibilities on trainers and stable staff but says they are a critical part of protecting horse health and maintaining racing operations.
There are no current plans to stop, reduce or regionalise racing or trials. These measures are intended to help keep racing and trialling operating safely while reducing the risk of Strangles spreading further.
Key points include:
- Daily temperature monitoring remains the cornerstone of the protocols and is required for every horse accepted to race or trial.
- There are no current plans to restrict horse movements into or out of the Waikato, provided the required protocols are followed.
- Trainers should plan for the current requirements to remain in place for at least one month while the situation continues to be monitored.
- Everyone has a role to play by following the requirements, completing declarations accurately and acting early if a horse shows signs of illness.
NZTR will continue to monitor the situation closely with industry veterinarians and partners and will update participants if any further changes are required.
